My Favorite Dev Tool This Month — and Why I Can’t Quit It

wrap

Every month I try to rotate in something new — a framework, a library, a CLI tool, anything to keep the skills fresh. But lately, one tool has absolutely refused to leave my daily workflow, no matter what shiny new toys come along: Warp.

Yep — the terminal.

Why Warp Is Sticking

Look, I’ve been a terminal nerd forever. From the old-school iTerm to zsh trickery to fancy dotfile setups, I thought I’d seen it all. But Warp felt different from the first moment.

Here’s why I can’t quit it:

Blocks and commands feel modern — Warp lets me treat every command as a shareable, recallable block. No more scrolling through an unreadable wall of text or digging through history | grep.

AI-powered completions — It sounds like a gimmick until you try it. Warp’s GPT-based suggestions save me from Googling yet another awk or sed pattern.

Collaboration — I can copy a block, paste it into Slack, and another dev can see exactly what I ran. That’s a game-changer for pair debugging.

Speed — It’s built in Rust, and you feel that snappiness every time you hit enter.

Where It Shines Day to Day

A good week for me is juggling:

  • Kubernetes manifests

  • Docker builds

  • Terraform plans

  • Git commits

  • Maybe a sprinkle of htop or netstat

Warp has made all of that smoother. Instead of flipping between tabs, missing command flags, or rewriting the same kubectl line ten times, I just treat each block as a documented “step.”

And that’s the magic: context. Regular terminals are timeless but contextless; Warp makes context a first-class citizen.

Beyond the Hype

I’ll be real — no tool is perfect. Warp is still maturing, and I sometimes hit rough edges (like occasional plugin breakages). But the team ships fast, and the experience is so refreshing that I’m willing to put up with a bug here and there.

Honestly, it feels like the first major rethinking of what a terminal can be in a decade.

Should You Try It?

If you:

✅ live in the terminal
✅ share commands with teammates
✅ wish your shell had a hint of modern UX

…give Warp a spin. You might find, like me, that you can’t quit it even after you try.
